Pros and Cons of dumping Langer

Nathan Cyran

In this article, I will examine the pros and cons of dumping Justin Langer in favour of Damien Martyn.

Pros
  • Langer clearly out of form, Martyn in red-hot form
  • Bringing Martyn in gives Australia an extra part-time bowler to turn to after the frontline bowlers have been used
  • Martyn is also an excellent all-round fielder (evidenced by the catch in Adelaide vs West Indies) and is a good slip catcher
  • Martyn has always delivered in recent call-ups
Middle Ground
  • Precedence has been set. Poor form will not be tolerated.  Will selectors tolerate similar problems from more senior players?
  • Age. Both players of a similar age, evening out
  • West Aust influence, a zero net effect.
Cons
  • Loss of a left handed batsman leaving only 2 in the team, less chance of a left-right combination
  • Loss of possibly the best short-leg fielder in world cricket. Likely replacements for that position: Hayden or Ponting
  • Experience in English conditions/knowledge of English grounds. While this knowledge could be spread in the dressing rooms, would be better to be on show in the field.
  • Team camaraderie. Langer always first to congratulate team members on good performances.
